Rancho Park: the Westside municipal classic
Rancho Park is the choice for a traditional full-length round in West Los Angeles. Undulating fairways and small greens place a premium on positioning and approach shots. We would put it ahead of a long cross-city drive if you are already staying on the Westside, but choose Woodley Lakes instead if forgiveness is your main concern.
The standard weekday green fee is $42; weekend play is $53, or $58 before 9 a.m. Cart rental is separate. The property also has a lighted driving range and putting greens. Use the official Rancho Park course page for rates and facilities, then check LA City tee-time availability.
Wilson: the longer Griffith Park test
Wilson is our Griffith Park recommendation for golfers who want the longer of the two main courses. The setting combines tree-lined holes with gentle slopes, and a shared practice facility makes it straightforward to warm up before either course. Select tees that match your distance rather than choosing purely on the course’s reputation.

Harding: accuracy at a slightly lower price
Harding is the alternative when you want Griffith Park golf with a lower published green fee. Its narrower fairways and approach targets make accuracy important; a shorter course is not automatically an easier one. Compare available times on both courses before committing to one.
Standard green fees are $38 on weekdays and $49 on weekends, or $54 before 9 a.m. on weekends. The official Harding page lists current facilities and rates. Book through LA City’s tee-time system and check that your reservation names Harding rather than Wilson.
Woodley Lakes: a forgiving Valley option
Woodley Lakes is our starting recommendation for newer golfers choosing among LA’s full-length municipal courses. Its relatively flat terrain and wide fairways offer more room than a tight, target-heavy layout. Family tees add another way to choose an appropriate distance. It remains an 18-hole round, so allow time and choose tees that keep play moving.

Hansen Dam: a different kind of municipal round
Hansen Dam is a Valley alternative when you want more changes in elevation than Woodley Lakes. Its two nines have different terrain, making it a useful choice for a varied round at the same published weekday green fee. Pick it for that change of pace, rather than assuming all city courses play alike.

More public golf in Los Angeles County
Los Verdes: ocean views in Rancho Palos Verdes
Los Verdes is our recommendation when the setting is a major part of the trip. The public course sits above the coast in Rancho Palos Verdes and offers ocean views without a private-club invitation. Consider it for a planned golf outing rather than choosing only by its distance on a map.
Posted walking green fees start at $45.75 Monday–Thursday, $48.75 Friday, and $50.50 on weekends; a shared-cart seat adds $16.50. Check the official Los Verdes site and its public tee-time booking page for the actual price and available starts.
Brookside: choose the course before you book
Brookside is a 36-hole public facility beside the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The C. W. Koiner course is par 72; E. O. Nay is par 70. That distinction matters when comparing tee times—two starts at Brookside may be on different courses. Check the Rose Bowl event calendar as part of planning the drive and arrival.
Public reservations are available up to 14 days ahead. The operator directs golfers to live booking for current rates and asks for cancellations at least 24 hours in advance to avoid its stated penalties. Use the course comparison and booking FAQ before selecting Koiner or Nay.
Angeles National: a premium round in Sunland
Angeles National is a public Nicklaus Design course with four tee options. It belongs in a different budget category from the municipal recommendations: choose it when you want to allocate more of the day’s budget to the golf itself. Review the operator’s maintenance notices before booking a special trip.
Published rates are $110 Monday–Wednesday, $120 Thursday, $170 Friday, $205 Saturday and holidays, and $195 Sunday, with a GPS-equipped cart included. Reservations open ten days ahead and are online only. Read the current rates and 48-hour cancellation policy and check course notices before paying.
Two regional golf trips beyond LA County
Rustic Canyon: a course-design day trip
Rustic Canyon is in Moorpark, Ventura County. Broad fairways and opportunities to use the ground make it our recommendation for golfers interested in how a course asks them to choose shots. Give the trip enough time to enjoy the round; it is a regional outing rather than a neighborhood Los Angeles course.
Prime green fees booked within 14 days are $65 Monday–Thursday and $90 Friday–Sunday and holidays. Booking 15–28 days ahead adds a $20 nonrefundable advance fee, bringing those prices to $85 and $110. Riding carts are $20 per player. Black Gold: an Orange County option
Black Gold is an Arthur Hills design in Yorba Linda, Orange County, with rolling terrain and water features. It is an option for golfers already on that side of the region or willing to plan a longer outing. Compare the drive and live price against Angeles National or Rustic Canyon before choosing it solely from a Los Angeles search.
The operator separates nonresident booking from Yorba Linda resident and loyalty booking. Follow the correct path on Black Gold’s official site and confirm the quoted rate and maintenance notices for your date. Do not assume a resident offer applies to a visiting player.
How to book LA City municipal tee times
Rancho Park, Wilson, Harding, Woodley Lakes, and Hansen Dam use the LA City system. According to the city’s booking FAQ, player-card holders can reserve nine days ahead at 6 a.m. Pacific; the general public can reserve seven days ahead at 6 a.m. Pacific.
The $10 per-player booking deposit is nonrefundable but is credited toward the green fee when you play. It is not an extra $10 on top of the quoted green fee. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead to avoid additional no-show penalties; cancellation still forfeits the deposit.
