Annandale Golf Club was established in 1906 by prominent members of the Pasadena community, a founding circle that included railroad magnate Henry Huntington and George S. Patton Sr., father of the World War II general. The original routing in the arroyo country west of town was the work of Willie Watson, the Scottish-born architect behind many of Southern California's earliest courses. In 1911 the club hired a young William P. "Billy" Bell as greenkeeper and caddie master, and it was at Annandale that one of the Golden Age's great California architects learned his trade: in 1924 Bell extended the routing into the San Gabriel foothill canyons, reworking the bunkering and carving out the dramatic "canyon holes" — the 14th through 16th — that remain the course's calling card.
Mid-century freeway construction clipped the property and scrambled parts of the routing, leaving the par-70 layout with an unusual five par 3s. In 2007 the club undertook a roughly $7.9 million renovation under architect Brian Silva, who rebuilt all 18 greens, regrassed the fairways with bermudagrass, and restored 75 bunkers (adding a dozen more) in Bell's flamboyant style. In November 2025 Annandale began a comprehensive restoration with Todd Eckenrode's Origins Golf Design aimed at reestablishing the integrity and intent of Bell's design — new tees, greens, bunkers, fairways, irrigation and grassing, plus revived natural drainage swales. Construction wrapped in spring 2026, with the course anticipated to reopen in early October 2026.
Annandale's signature stretch is the run of "canyon holes" from the 14th through the 16th, created by Billy Bell in the 1920s as the course tumbles into and out of the property's ravines; Silva's renovation added a distinctive double punchbowl green at the 15th. Elsewhere, the 2007 work converted the 6th from a 470-yard par 5 into one of the course's most demanding par 4s and turned the 17th into a tempting, drivable par 4 — a risk-reward note just before the finisher.
