Its semi-private 18-hole, par-72 course uses tree-lined fairways, water and guarded greens rather than a wide-open desert setting. The club’s hole-by-hole tour is useful for planning lines from the tee and the safest side of each green.
The club opened to the local golf community in 1963 and continues to offer both member and nonmember play. Mature eucalyptus, pine and cottonwood trees frame many holes, while ponds and narrow approach lanes change the decisions as the round progresses. The routing rewards keeping the ball in position for the next shot: an approach from the wrong side can leave a steep downhill putt or a recovery across water.
The first hole finishes at a two-level green protected by two front bunkers. The narrow fourth requires care between eucalyptus and pines, while the eighth is a par 3 with a water carry. The tenth is the longest hole and often plays into the wind. Water also shapes approaches on the seventh and sixteenth. Across the round, several greens slope sharply from back to front, so approach position matters as much as length.
The inward nine adds different tests. The tenth is the longest hole and generally plays into the prevailing wind. At the par-3 eleventh, a false front makes an approach that lands short especially awkward. The fourteenth asks for a tee shot between bunkers before a guarded par-5 green; the fifteenth starts over a lake and has a narrow target. The seventeenth is another water-carry par 3, while the reachable par-5 eighteenth brings water back in front of the finishing green. The club’s tour gives a separate description for every hole, so players can review those choices before arriving.
The club provides a driving range, practice greens, chipping areas, a pro shop and a renovated clubhouse. Members receive early tee times; public play begins later in the morning, and nonmembers may reserve ahead under the club’s booking rules. Sundale is at 6218 Sundale Avenue.
