Course History

Sherwood takes its name from Hollywood's golden age. Lake Sherwood, the man-made reservoir the club overlooks, was built in 1904 as Potrero Lake; after Douglas Fairbanks' Robin Hood was filmed on its shores in the early 1920s, the surrounding canyon became known as "Sherwood Forest" and the lake was renamed. Decades later, Jack Nicklaus routed a Signature design through this oak-studded valley at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains — the front nine climbing into the foothills, the back nine tumbling down toward the lake past brooks and waterfalls — and Sherwood Country Club formally opened on October 30, 1989.

Few private clubs have hosted more televised golf. Greg Norman's team-play Shark Shootout was contested here from 1989 to 1999, and in 1999 the club staged the "Showdown at Sherwood," the first-ever prime-time live golf match, pitting Tiger Woods against David Duval. From 2000 through 2013, Sherwood was the December home of Tiger Woods' World Challenge, and beginning in 2016 it hosted the PGA Tour Champions' PowerShares QQQ Championship. In 2020 the club welcomed the PGA Tour's Zozo Championship, played at Sherwood as an alternate venue when the pandemic prevented the event's usual staging in Japan. The course record of 61 was set by Dustin Johnson in 2014.
