Course History

North Ranch Country Club opened in the mid-1970s as a Ted Robinson, Sr. design, with the original eighteen — today's Valley and Oaks nines — winding through rolling hills and mature oaks in Westlake Village. Robinson, one of the West Coast's most prolific postwar course architects, stamped the property with his trademark water features and member-friendly, risk-reward strategy. A third nine, the Lakes, was added in the late 1980s, bringing the club to 27 holes and putting even more water into play; the club still points to the Lakes' eighth as the premier hole on the property.

The club has deep competitive roots: since 1978 it has hosted the Southwestern Intercollegiate (now the Southwestern Invitational), a college golf tournament started by USC and today run as Pepperdine's lone home event, which reached its 47th edition in the 2025–26 season. In 2024, North Ranch undertook its first comprehensive renovation in five decades, with Tim Jackson of Jackson Kahn Design and Landscapes Unlimited rebuilding first the Valley and then the Oaks nine while preserving Robinson's routing — repositioning bunkers for modern distances, expanding greens to between 3,600 and 11,000 square feet, and regrassing wall-to-wall with bermuda tees, fairways and rough beneath a single monostand of bentgrass on the greens.
