Course History

Golf at Mountain Meadows traces back more than a century: the course says it was originally established in 1921 as a private club, while golf databases list the layout as opening for play in 1927. The original design is credited to William P. Bell, one of the most prolific architects of Southern California's golden age of course building.

The course was later remodeled by Ted Robinson, the Southern California architect best known for his water features and resort designs, leaving Mountain Meadows with an unusual hybrid character that reflects two different eras of California golf. Today it operates as a Los Angeles County public course managed by American Golf, bordering Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park and the Fairplex, and the course notes it has been named Los Angeles County Course of the Year seven times in eight years.

The Design & Architecture

Bell's routing and Robinson's later touches play across genuinely hilly foothill terrain, where rolling fairways deliver blind tee shots, big elevation changes and constant side-hill stances. Kikuyu- and bermuda-covered fairways lead into Poa annua greens with plenty of undulation, and many holes frame panoramic views of the San Gabriel Mountains and neighboring Bonelli Park.

Signature Holes

The course's calling card is the par-4 10th, where a distinctive tree stands in the middle of the fairway and forces a genuine decision off the tee — take it on or play safely around it. From the opening par-5 1st to the par-4 18th, the routing keeps the round interesting with uneven lies and mountain views rather than length alone.

Playing the Course

At 6,440 yards against a par of 72, with a 71.2 rating and a slope of 129, Mountain Meadows is a sterner test than most municipal courses of similar length. The scorecard undersells the challenge of the lies: side-hill stances, uneven bounces and blind shots reward shot-shaping and local knowledge more than raw distance.
