Course History

Marshall Canyon Golf Course opened in 1966 as a Los Angeles County facility, laid out across roughly 110 acres of tree-covered canyon land in the foothills above La Verne. Built for the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, it has served for six decades as one of the county's canyon municipal courses, and today it is operated for the county by American Golf Corporation.

In recent years the county engaged landscape architects Gruen Associates to modernize the course for Southern California's water realities: the irrigation system was refurbished for efficiency, and out-of-play turf was strategically converted to drought-tolerant native grasses and plantings, sharpening the visual contrast between maintained fairways and natural rough. Through all of it, the course's most beloved feature has stayed the same — the resident deer that wander the fairways, often in plain view of golfers.

The Design & Architecture

Published records do not consistently credit an original architect, but the layout itself is classic canyon golf: the routing follows the natural terrain of the foothills, with mature trees running parallel to most fairways and sloping lies on nearly every hole that reward positional play. The card is a par 71 split 35–36, with four par 3s and three par 5s, and the greens — the course's calling card — are fast and shaped by significant undulation. Views stretch from the surrounding San Gabriel foothills out toward the Los Angeles skyline on clear days.

Signature Holes

The club itself points to holes 1, 16, and 18 as the layout's most notable, offering both strategic challenge and the course's best scenery. The round opens with a 471-yard par 5, a genuine birdie chance for those who find the fairway between the trees. On the back nine, the 16th is a 175-yard par 3 (just 117 yards from the forward tees) that demands a precise iron into one of the course's quick, sloping greens, and the 404-yard par-4 18th — one of the longest two-shotters on the card — brings the round home past some of the property's best-kept bunkering.

Playing the Course

At 6,110 yards from the back tees against a par of 71, Marshall Canyon is not long by modern standards, and its 69.2 rating sits below par — but the 122 slope tells the truer story for most players: hilly, uneven lies, tree-lined corridors that punish crooked drives, and fast, undulating greens where being on the wrong side of the hole can cost a stroke. The par 3s range from 163 to 202 yards from the blues, and all three par 5s are under 485 yards, so scoring chances are there for golfers who keep the ball in play and stay below the pins.
