Course History

Alhambra Golf Course first opened for play in 1956 as a nine-hole municipal layout designed by William F. Bell, one of Southern California's most prolific golf course architects, whose work shaped dozens of courses across the region. Built along Almansor Street in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley, it gave the City of Alhambra its own public golf ground during the postwar boom in municipal golf.

In 1977, architect Algie Pulley added nine new holes and redesigned the layout, creating the 18-hole, par-71 routing that golfers play today. The course remains city-owned and is operated as a full public facility, with day-to-day management handled by Indigo Golf. Its night-lighted practice range with Toptracer technology and an award-winning golf shop — honored as PGA Merchandiser of the Year for Southern California — have made it a neighborhood hub as much as a golf course.

The Design & Architecture

Bell's original parkland instincts still show on the front nine: fairly flat holes with generous, tree-lined fairways that ease golfers into the round. Pulley's back nine changes character, rolling over terrain with elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic, defended by strategically placed bunkers. The unusual card — four par 5s, five par 3s and nine par 4s — keeps the variety high despite the modest footprint, and the course is turfed wall-to-wall in Bermuda grass, fairways and greens alike.

Signature Holes

The signature hole is the 16th, a tricky par 5 that opens with an intimidating tee shot over water just to reach the fairway. It anchors a back nine widely considered the tougher side, where the elevation changes and hazards demand nearly every club in the bag after the gentler warm-up of the front.

Playing the Course

At 5,478 yards with a 66.2 rating and 116 slope, Alhambra is deliberately fun rather than frustratingly long — the course itself boasts that many guests card career-best rounds here. The five par 3s and four reachable par 5s create real scoring chances for beginners and short hitters, while better players can treat it as a wedge-and-putter tune-up; the water on 16 and the back nine's slopes still supply enough teeth to keep it honest.
